Interesting interview posted at MLive with Jim Harbaugh.  He discusses recruiting today and how it has changed along with his thoughts on the first six months of his tenure as Michigan’s head coach.  Harbaugh also mentions Bo Schembechler and what he would think of Twitter.

Michigan Athletic Director Jim Hackett calls new apparel deal with Nike “the largest payout in the nation.”  Official details have yet to be released but it is expected to surpass Notre Dame’s 10-year $90 million deal with Under Armour.  Hacket also stated that it was on his second day as coach that Jim Harbaugh provided his response that he preferred Nike.  This has been reported by the Detroit Free Press’ Mark Snyder.

Big Ten Network announced today that the Michigan at Maryland, October 3rd game will be in primetime on the network. Michigan also plays Utah to start the season in primetime. You can also expect a third game, to be held at the Big House, in primetime as well.

It’s official, Michigan has added punter Blake O’Neill to the football squad as a grad student transfer from Weber State. O’Neill played in all 12 games a season ago, averaging 44 yards per punt.  He finished sixth nationally in punting.  O’Neill will be a welcome addition and could definitely have an impact this upcoming season.

April 9, 2015

In what was the worst kept history in college football, the University of Michigan announced the addition of Iowa grad student transfer, QB Jake Rudock.  The school released the following statement, “I am excited for Jake to get here and compete with the quarterbacks that we already have in the program,” assistant Jedd Fisch. “I’ve known Jake for a long time, since 2011, and I am excited to be a part of the staff that is now coaching him. I think that Jake brings great maturity and experience to the program. He has 25 starts under his belt in the Big Ten and a winning record of 15-10. All of that, combined with the quarterbacks we currently have in the program and all the skill we are surrounding him with, we are excited about the things that Jake can do for our program.”

There is no question that Rudock will be given every opportunity to compete for the starting job upon his arrival.  Despite the improvement of Shane Morris most expect Rudock to win the job.  I would not count Morris out of the race, however, there is no question Rudock’s skills and experience are a welcome addition.  His Big Ten experience is desperately needed for a young offense.

The Michigan Wolverines received a commitment from one of the top players in the state in Bloomfield’s Matt Falcon who is now the fourth prep star in the past week to declare their intentions to head to Ann Arbor for college.

Falcon, arguably one of the top running backs in the country, is a much needed back that will bring a style and skill set that is currently not on the Wolverines roster.  At 6’1, 215lbs, Falcon has very good size but also possesses some “wiggle” and elusiveness that is currently lacking.  He also has above average speed and tackle breaking ability.  For a breakdown of Falcon’s recruitment, click here…..

Michigan hosted in-state rival Michigan State hoping to put an end to their four game losing streak and get back in the win column on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the game proved to be a bit of a mismatch, particularly in the front court and the Spartans came out on top 80-67.  For game recap, click here…..

Michigan traveled to Illinois to take on the fightin Illini but they were unable to get it done in overtime, once again, falling short by 12.  The Wolverines had a seven-point lead with close to three minutes remaining but Illinois went on a 19-0 run to end regulation and in overtime to come away with the victory.  For game details, click here…..

Feb 10, 2015

Both Desmond Morgan and Jabrill Peppers have received their medical redshirts for the 2014 season and received an additional year of eligibility at Michigan.  Both, fully healthy, are expected to play integral roles in the upcoming season on defense for the Wolverines.

Feb 8, 2015

Wolverines fall to Indiana 70-67 on the road.  Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman had an opportunity to tie at the end of regulation but the ball fell short and Michigan suffered their third consecutive conference loss.  For a detailed breakdown of the game, click here…..

There are positives to take from this as the young players are playing hard and gaining valuable experience, however the record will suffer.  There will be no NCAA tournament this season for the Wolverines but they should be much stronger in 2015/16 season.

Jake Ryan, Frank Clark and Devin Funchess have all received an invitation to the NFL combine.  Raymon Taylor and Devin Gardner did not.  This does not mean they will not be drafted or signed by an NFL team as each year there are many players drafted and/or signed as priority free agents that are not invited.  They will need to perform well at Michigan’s pro day, however.

Feb 7, 2015

Hearing Stanford CB Wayne Lyons transferring to Michigan most definitely will happen. I would expect Lyons to start opposite Jourdan Lewis at CB or possibly at nickel back. Depends on where Greg Jackson feels Blake Countess fits in best.

Feb 6, 2015

The Mike Weber saga continues after it was discovered the Ohio State coaches concealed the fact that RB Coach Stan Drayton was leaving the Buckeyes to take a position with the Chicago Bears.  Drayton continued to recruit Weber up until the final days, hours and minutes before the Detroit Cass Tech star running back signed his letter of intent with Ohio State.  But during their conversation Drayton and head coach Urban Meyer failed to mention Drayton’s impending departure.

That was not good…..what am I speaking of?  The Wolverines loss to Iowa tonight.  Michigan got off to a fast start but fizzled quickly and never recovered.  There was no magic and no answer from the Michigan coaching staff or players when it came to Iowa’s size advantage and length.  This was a complete domination.  The game recap, is right here…..

Former Houston Cougar QB John O’Korn announced he is transferring to Michigan.  O’Korn, who was named Freshman of the Year in the AAC, will sit out the 2015 season and have two years of eligibility remaining in 2016 & 2017.  He will be expected to compete for a starting job next season.

Feb 4, 2015

Michigan started off signing day flipping Karan Higdon and Keith Washington and finished strong adding Tyrone Wheatley, Jr and Shelton Johnson.  No question, Johnson was a shock to many as the kid was able to keep things quiet.  Despite the disappointment in losing out on Chris Clark, Mike Weber and Van Jefferson, the Wolverines still enjoyed a big day and a terrific class of recruits.  For a summary on each commit, check out our signing day capsule for the entire class.

Michigan fights back but falls in overtime to Spartans, 76-66.  For game recap, click here…..

Three-star prospect WR Deontay Burnett has decommitted from Washington State and committed to Michigan today.  This is a big addition to the 2015 class.  Burnett is 6’0, 170lbs and possesses very good speed.  More to come as we are just three days away from national signing day.

Jan 30, 2015

Michigan is hosting three players this weekend, WR Van Jefferson, CB Darius Adams and WR Deontay Burnett.  All three are currently committed elsewhere, which will require coach Harbaugh to flip these players.  Of the three they may have the best shot with Jefferson.

Signs are pointing positive with TE/DE Tyrone Wheatley, Jr right now but he is still undecided.  I’m hearing UCLA, USC and Alabama are all expecting Wheatley to sign with Michigan and he also cancelled his trip to Oregon this weekend.

Unfortunately, things are not trending as well with RB Mike Weber.  From what I’ve found out it appears as if he is going to stick with Ohio State.  It’s not 100% certain but I would be surprised if he flipped back at this point.  The fact Michigan offered Iowa commit, RB Karan Higdon within the past 24 hours also supports what I’m hearing.

TE Chris Clark appears to be leaning toward UCLA, which is what I have been hearing for a while now.  I will be very surprised if he signs with Michigan this Wednesday.

Michigan did make the final two for CB Iman Marshall, however you can expect Marshall to sign with USC.  I have been firm in this stance despite the optimism of others.  Coach Harbaugh and his staff did a great job recruiting Marshall but in the end nothing was going to pull him away from the Trojans.

Jan 26, 2015

A lot of information coming in and out of Ann Arbor today so let’s get to it.

Reagan Williams will be staying at Stanford.  He announced today.  Williams spent the weekend at Michigan for an official visit but reaffirmed his commitment to Stanford today.  That ship has sailed for the Wolverines.

Daishon Neal, a verbal commit to Nebraska received his Michigan offer but has now scheduled announced a public decision on local radio tomorrow in Omaha.  I have learned the purpose of this announcement is to confirm his commitment to Nebraska. It’s a little strange for a player to make a public announcement when he never de-committed and just to reaffirm his commitment.  Regardless, Neal will sign with Nebraska.

Michigan may be playing host to Colin Samuel, from Long Beach, CA, a current UCLA verbal commit and the teammate of Iman Marshall. Samuel was scheduled to visit UCLA this week but may be visiting Michigan this weekend.  This is still up in the air at this moment.  Samuel is a three-star prospect at CB.  UPDATE:  Samuel has decided not to visit Michigan. Speaking of Marshall…..

Jim Harbaugh visited Marshall for his in-home today in Southern California.  Marshall’s father will be present, which he was not when Iman took his official visit to Michigan last week.  Harbaugh is covering all bases and doing what he can but in the end Marshall will be a USC Trojan.

Tight End Matt Snyder also received an in-home visit with Harbaugh today as Michigan continues in their efforts to flip the three-star prospect from Nebraska.  It’s an uphill battle and Snyder has an in-home visit scheduled with the Cornhuskers head coach Mike Riley for later this week.  In the end, expect Snyder to remain with Nebraska.

I’m hearing whispers…..that Chris Clark to UCLA is becoming more of a reality as we are just over a week away from national signing day.  From what I understand Clark was blown away by his visit to California (and the weather) and the Bruins are going to be very difficult to beat.  Anything can happen but I am to the point where I will be shocked if he announces Michigan as his choice on February 4th.

I expect the next commit for the maize-n-blue to be none other than Jake Pickard.  His visit this weekend went incredibly well and his father came away very impressed with coach Harbaugh.  He is currently committed to Wisconsin but I believe in the end Pickard will be a Wolverine.

UCLA commit Will Lockett has reaffirmed his commitment to the Bruins today after taking an official to Michigan this past weekend.  There was just too much ground to make up with Lockett and though he enjoyed the visit it was a long shot to pull him away from UCLA.

Mike Weber…..the local kid from Detroit that every Michigan fan has their fingers crossed ends back up in this recruiting class has not yet scheduled any visit to Michigan and I don’t think it is going to happen.  What will likely occur is him receiving a visit from Jim Harbaugh.  It was scheduled to happen last night but plans changed and they were not able to meet up.  I expect coach Harbaugh to take a visit down to Detroit to meet with Mike and his father, along with Tyrone Wheatley, at some point in the next week.  If this does happen Michigan could have a chance however I am not very optimistic at this point.  I believe in the end Weber will be a Buckeye.

Currently sitting at nine committed recruits in the 2015 class I do not envision Michigan getting more than two or three at the most by the end of signing day.  They just don’t have the numbers.  I like their chances with Pickard and possibly Darius Adams, who is visiting this weekend.  I now believe Clark is a bit of a long shot as is Tyrone Wheatley, Jr.  Damon Arnette appears to have settled on South Carolina though he is taking a visit to Ohio State this weekend.  I don’t see Michigan landing Arnette.

So, the finality is likely to be Pickard, possibly Adams and maybe…..Weber, though I am not confident of that.  Chris Williamson, Roquan Smith and Iman Marshall are even bigger long shots than Clark.  I believe they will probably end up with approximately 11 players in this class.

Outside of the recruiting world, Justice Hayes has decided to transfer as a grad student in 2015.  Hayes was redshirted as a freshman and been a backup running back the past three years but does have one season of eligibility remaining.  Coach Harbaugh offered the fifth year to Hayes but he has elected to go elsewhere.  This is not a surprise as Hayes will likely end up somewhere where he can battle for a starting job and possibly be featured in an offense.  This was not going to happen at Michigan.  Not only are Derrick Green and De’Veon Smith returning but Ty Isaac will be eligible this fall as well and many believe he is the odds on favorite to take the job from Green.  And let’s not forget Drake Johnson, though he will be returning from a second ACL injury and may not be fully recovered by the start of the season.

An interesting running back possibility in 2015 will be sophomore Wyatt Shallman, who saw limited action this past season on special teams.  Shallman is a very good athlete and could be developed into a fullback, running back, tight end or linebacker.

Jan 25, 2015

Nolan Ulizio has committed to Michigan after taking his official visit this weekend.  Ulizio is a long-range project type of OT and will be redshirted in 2015.  At 6’6, 280lbs he has a nice frame and good athletic ability and could develop down the road.

Jan 24, 2015

Reuben Jones committed to Michigan during his official visit to Ann Arbor today making him the first commit in the Jim Harbaugh era.  Here is the story…..

Most likely to commit to Michigan football this weekend, Reuben Jones, DE and Jake Pickard, TE.  I’m not saying they will but if any of these kids were to, it would be Jones and/or Pickard.

Jan 24, 2015

The Wolverines fall, in overtime to Wisconsin after rallying from behind on a late second three-point shot by Derrick Walton. For the game recap, click here…..

Michigan hosts Wisconsin tonight at home in a crucial conference matchup.  The Badgers are currently the #6 team in the country and though, the Wolverines are healthier than they were a week ago, are likely to find Wisconsin too difficult to overcome.  With no Caris LeVert they desperately need someone to step up and become a consistent threat on offense.  Zak Irvin and Derrick Walton need to lead this team and hopefully Aubrey Dawkins can be that guy to replace LeVert.

Jabrill Peppers will be opportunity to move to safety and could end up starting opposite Jarrod Wilson.  Delano Hill and Dymonte Thomas may have something to say about this as well.  If Peppers does move inside it would leave Jourdan Lewis and Blake Countess as the starting corners but very little depth behind them.

Channing Stribling played quite a bit as a freshman but saw little action in 2014.  Stribling has the size and athleticism to develop into a top-notch corner but has yet to put it all together.  If Peppers moves inside Stribs will have a shot at getting significant minutes this season.  Also, will this be the year that Terry Richardson steps up?

Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh has hired his son, Jay Harbaugh as a member of the coaching staff.  Jay, has spent the past three years as a Quality Control coach with the Baltimore Ravens.  Though not confirmed, it is expected Jay will assist in the coaching of the tight end group.  This may very well complete the coaching staff at Michigan.

It has been confirmed that Mike Zordich has been added to Michigan’s football coaching staff.  Zordich is expected to coach safeties or cornerbacks, sharing the defensive backfield with Greg Jackson.  Zordich has major ties to the state of Ohio and also has NFL experience.

The Michigan coaching staff is beginning to take shape, let’s take a look at what we know and think……

What we know:

  • Head Coach/QB Coach – Jim Harbaugh
  • Offensive Coordinator/Interior OL Coach – Tim Drevno
  • Defensive Coordinator/LB Coach – D.J. Durkin
  • Defensive Line Coach (DE/OLB) – Greg Mattison

What we think are possibles:

  • Defensive Backs – Greg Jackson
  • Strength & Conditioning – Kevin Tolbert
  • Running Backs – Tyrone Wheatley
  • Wide Receivers – Jimmie Dougherty
  • Interior Defensive Line – Tom Sims
  • Special Teams – ?
  • Tight Ends/Offensive Tackles – ?

This is not confirmed by Jim Harbaugh as no announcements have been made.  There is a team meeting scheduled for later this evening and you would expect most of the coaching staff to be in place and present for the meeting.

Recruiting

January 16th official visits – TE Chris Clark, CB Damon Arnette (South Carolina verbal commit), OLB Roquan Smith.  I also expect CB Marcus Lewis and Iman Marshall to visit by the end of January.

Michigan basketball headed to Pennsylvania for their second conference road game in a row to take on the Nittany Lions.  The big three came through and they also got some valuable minutes from the bench in a 74-65 victory over Penn State.  For a detailed analysis of the game, click here……

Jan 5, 2015

Sophomore OL Kyle Bosch arrived in Ann Arbor today and met with Jim Harbaugh this afternoon.  Shortly after the meeting it was announced that Bosch is being released from his scholarship and will be allowed to transfer.  Details have not been released and it would be unfair to speculate.  Bosch did say he did not know where he would transfer to.  And if you were wondering, yes, this does open up another scholarship.

Sam Webb has confirmed D.J. Durkin as the new Defensive Coordinator of the Michigan Wolverines.  More to come…..

Just heard that Shannon Turley has changed his mind and will remain at Stanford…..No word yet on other candidates…..

According to Scout.com Stanford’s Strength and Conditioning Coach, Shannon Turley will be taking over the same position at Michigan under Jim Harbaugh.  Here is a link to the story………

To learn more about Turley and what he accomplished at Stanford, check out this article from the NY Times……  Big hire for Jim Harbaugh.

QB Alex Malzone and WR Brian Cole have enrolled at Michigan, officially.  MLive.com has the scoop…..

Bruce Feldman is reporting that Jim Harbaugh is trying to land both Lance Anderson, Stanford DC and D.J. Durkin, Florida DC for his staff at Michigan.  He is also keeping Greg Mattison.  If Harbaugh were to somehow manage to get all three this could end up becoming one of the all-time great coaching staffs in college football.  Durkin is in Ann Arbor today meeting with Harbaugh. Should be an interesting week.  Feldman is also reporting that all three are in-line with this vision.

I am hearing that Vince Marrow may be leaning towards staying at Kentucky but this is not confirmed.  Marrow’s relationship with Mark Stoops is strong and he may have difficulty leaving him.  Should know within the next 24-48 hours.

2015 TE Chris Clark tweeted today that he will visit Michigan January 15th and UCLA the following week.  Clark has narrowed it down to the Wolverines and Bruins.

Jan 3, 2015

Jim Harbaugh continues to talk to coaches and high school recruits in an effort to have his staff together by January 16th, when Michigan can host their first “official visits” under their new leader. From what I am hearing is D.J. Durkin is the leading candidate to be named new Defensive Coordinator.  Durkin, is coaching Florida in their bowl game today but could be named the new DC in Ann Arbor as early as this coming week.  Greg Mattison has all been but assured to be a member of the new defensive staff at well.  How Harbaugh decides to use these pieces is not confirmed but Mattison is an experienced DL and LB coach which allows some flexibility with the new staff.

Harbaugh interviewed Kentucky TE coach Vince Marrow yesterday and was offered the position. To my knowledge no money has been discussed but the official offer should go out soon and then it will be up to Marrow.  A decision is expected by early next week.  This is a major addition to the Michigan staff, if Harbaugh can land Marrow.  He is very close to Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops and has ties to Ohio.  It will not be easy to pry him away and I fully expect Stoops to do everything he can to keep Marrow.  Stay tuned.

The #1 TE in the country, Chris Clark, has narrowed his top two schools to UCLA and Michigan and stated he will visit both in the coming weeks before making a decision.  Many believe Michigan is where he will eventually end up but I would not under estimate UCLA in this recruitment, and in fact, Clark came out recently and said the Bruins were the leader.  I have reason to believe it will be tougher than some Michigan fans believe to get him away from UCLA.  I’m not saying it can’t or won’t happen but rather it will not be very easy.

I fully expect the following high school standouts to be visiting Harbaugh and the new coaching staff in January:

  • CB Marcus Lewis
  • CB Iman Marshall
  • TE Chris Clark
  • RBs John Kelly and Mike Weber
  • WR Auden Tate

Michigan currently has six players committed in their 2015 class – QB Alex Malzone, WR Brian Cole, OT Grant Newsome, OG Jon Runyan, Jr, S Tyree Kinnel and K Andrew David.  As it currently stands today they can add up to five more recruits and possibly 7 – 9, if you believe there will be a little attrition.  I also expect a few names not being mentioned right now to come to the forefront in the ensuing weeks prior to signing day.  For now, I will keep those names quiet.  As for the 2016 class, let’s just say the coaches are focused on 2015 right now.

A full two days into his tenure as Michigan’s Head Football Coach, Jim Harbaugh is wasting little time in hitting the recruiting and coaching trails by heating up the phones.  After adding Tim Drevno as his Offensive Coordinator yesterday, Harbaugh looks to add to his staff in the next couple of days including a big possibility from Kentucky.  Harbaugh has also been active in recruiting and has already begun scheduling visits to Ann Arbor for later in January.  For the latest up to date information on the goings on in at Michigan, click here…..

Where has THIS guy been all year???  Freshman Aubrey Dawkins hit 6 of 7 three-pointers in helping lead the Wolverines to a come from behind, overtime victory over Illinois.  The Michigan offense was stuggling, and I do mean struggling, in the first half but Dawkins caught fire coming off the bench in the second half providing the team with the spark they needed to upset (really?) the Illini.  For full details check out the story……
