What does Harbaugh have to work with at Michigan in 2015?

Updated: December 29, 2014

How full or empty is the cupboard for Jim Harbaugh upon his arrival in Ann Arbor?  Let’s take a detailed look at what is coming back in 2015:

Offense – Returning Game Starts
QB – 2
FB – 12
RB – 13
WR – 20
TE – 28
OT – 24
OG – 56
C – 16

Total Offense Returning Starts – 171
Total Offense Starters Returning – 9 (lose Gardner and Funchess, return entire two deep everywhere else)
2015 Seniors in projected two deep – 6 (Kerridge, Houma, G. Glasgow, Norfleet, Williams, Miller)

Defense – Returning Game Starts and Starters
DE – 4 (no starters returning – projected Ojemudia and Charlton)
DT – 30 (entire depth chart returns on interior including both starters)
OLB – 36 (entire depth chart returns outside including both starters)
ILB – 31 (one starter returning in Morgan despite losing starter Ryan)
CB – 38 (both starters returning in Lewis/Countess along with Peppers)
S – 32 (entire depth chart returns on including both starters)

Total Defense Returning Game Starts – 171
Total Defense Starters Returning – 9 (lose Clark, Beyer and Ryan but return Morgan)
2015 Seniors in projected two deep – 9  (Ojemudia, R. Glasgow, Pipkins, Ross, Bolden, Morgan, Jenkins-Stone, Countess, Wilson)

Total Team Returning Game Starts – 342
Total Team Returning Starters – 18 of possible 22

Summary – Should be an extremely experienced squad returning with 18 former starters coming back and a total of 342 game starts.  Experience at every position except quarterback.  Nice balance of underclassmen and upperclassmen. Roster should be very spread out amongst classes and as many as six seniors (Ojemudia, Glasgow, Bolden, Ross, Morgan, Wilson) should be starting on defense, potentially seven (Countess if you count nickel).

Offensively, only question mark is at QB.  Offensive line has 96 returning starts and all five starters back.  Actually entire two deep is back on the line.  Top four tight ends all return as well.  Top four running backs are back and they add Ty Isaac.  Receiving corps loses Funchess but adds Drake Harris and potentially Brian Cole.  Darboh has look of developing into a very good receiver as well.

Experience alone should help team and despite loss of Devin Gardner the QB play should become more consistent.

A lot to work with on this roster……

Definitely a lot on defense however offensive side has questions. Especially the QB position but still I like the future and what is ahead.
